Why can’t the website grader find my booking button?
The grader loads your homepage once and reads its code, looking for the name of a known booking tool. If your button is added by a script after the page loads, sits inside an embedded calendar, points to a custom address or is part of an image, the grader can miss it. A patient might still see it, so check by eye as well.

How the grader looks
The grader fetches your homepage the way a simple browser would, reads the code and looks for the name of a recognised booking tool anywhere in the code, such as Jane, Cliniko or similar. It doesn’t run scripts, click buttons or follow menus. It is a quick read of one page, not a full audit.
Common reasons it misses a button
- The button is loaded by a script. Some widgets add themselves after the page loads, so they aren’t in the code the grader reads.
- The calendar is embedded. If the embed loads its calendar by script and the page code never names the tool, the grader sees nothing.
- The link goes to a custom address. If your booking page sits on your own domain, or a tool the grader doesn’t know, it may not match.
- The button is an image. An image of a button with no link in the code can’t be read.
- The link says something vague, such as “Contact us”, and goes to a form rather than a booking page.
- The booking link is on another page, not your homepage.
- Your site blocks automated visits, so the grader couldn’t read the page at all.
What to check yourself
- Open your homepage on your phone. Is there a clear Book online button without scrolling?
- Tap it. Does it open a booking page that works on a phone?
- Right-click the page on a computer and choose “View page source”. Search for the name of your booking tool.
- Look at the header, the first screen and the footer.
What to do
- If a patient can’t find it either, that’s the real fix. Add a plain button on the first screen. See where the button should go.
- If a patient can, but the grader can’t, you probably have a script or a custom link. Make sure there is also a plain link to your booking page in the page itself.
- If you don’t have online booking, see how to add it or how to link Jane or Cliniko.
Not sure where your clinic stands? We’ll look at it the way a new patient does and send a short written report. No pitch.
Questions owners ask
Does a missed button hurt me with Google?
Not directly. The grader’s result is only a check against what a visitor’s browser can read. What counts is that patients can find and use the button.
Should I change my site to pass the check?
Only if it helps patients. A plain link that works on a phone helps both.
Can you check it properly?
Yes. An audit looks at your whole booking path, not only the homepage.
